Sunscreens What does SPF mean? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measurement based on the number of minutes it takes unprotected skin to receive a sun dose that can cause slight burning of the skin. An SPF 15 means after the same skin has been properly applied with the sunscreen it will take 15 times as long or 150 minutes to receive the same level of reddening.
What does 'broad spectrum' sunscreen mean? Ultraviolet (UV) rays cause the most damage. A sunscreen labelled 'broad spectrum' offers protection from UV-A rays and UV-B light.
